Why we assess?

Baseline assessment shows us “how much the learner already knows”.

Some subjects will use baseline assessment so that we can gauge how well the learner has progressed after a certain time.

Formative assessment tells us “how is the learner getting along?” Continuous formative assessments monitor and support learning. This helps to “form” or develop the learner. Formative assessment is an ongoing gathering of information over time. Feedback is meaningful and aimed at improving the learning process. Learners are given the opportunity to try to improve their performance after formative assessment.

For every subject, there are plenty of practice assessments. Some of these aim to guide the learner to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes; other assessments prepare the learner for what to expect when they write an exam.

Diagnostic assessment enables the assessor to “look for the cause of learning problems”. The continuous monitoring of learner progress encourages a diagnostic perspective which identifies individual needs. Where barriers to learning have been identified, enrichment or remediation can be provided as intervention to ensure improvement of learner performance.

Summative assessment “sums up how a learner has progressed”. This is applied as a final judgement of a unit of learning. Like formative assessment it is also a form of feedback for learners and parents. It points to the future in respect to strengths in subjects and possible career paths.  These are the marks that are recorded on the progression reports. As every learner is different, a variety of assessment instruments are used. Some will take the form of projects, tests, exams, journals, or evidence of coursework.
